Some of you may know or remember that our RPAS license has to be renewed every 24 months. Yes, I know, one more thing to think about. Luckily, it won’t cost anything and it’s quite simple to do.

Please bear with me all along that email and I promise, at the end it will not be as painful as you may think it is.

 

So first of all, let’s see what Transport Canada says about it. I will translate the TC Gibberish for you.

 

1. 901.56 of the CARS says, if you have a basic RPAS or advanced RPAS, you have to complete one of the following item within the 24 months preceding the flight of your so loved foamy or sig cadet :
   1. you have been issued a basic RPAS or an advance RPAS certificate; or
   2. you have successfully completed:
   • 1. either the basic RPAS written test or advance RPAS written test
     2. the flight review for the advance RPAS
     3. any of the following training activities:
     • 1. attendance at a safety seminar endorsed by Transport Canada Aviation
       2. completion of an RPAS recurrent training program designed to update pilot knowledge, which includes, human factors, environmental factors, route planning, operations near aerodromes/airports, and applicable regulations, rules and procedures; or
       3. completion of a Transport Canada endorsed self-paced study program, which is designed to update pilot knowledge in the subjects specified in paragraph
2. 901.65 of the CARS says basically the same thing as 901.56 except for the advanced RPAS pilots. TC just likes repeating itself….

What was the last Transport Canada exam you passed or pilot certificate you got?  You only need to renew the last license. 

• if you have the basic RPAS, you renew this one. 
• If you have the advanced RPAS, you renew this one. In that last case, you don’t need to renew your basic RPAS as you are now advanced.

The date of the last exam you passed or pilot certificate you got, is what matters:

• For basic RPAS: when did you write the exam? More than 24months ago? then you need to renew it
• For advanced RPAS: when did you get your pilot certificate? More than 24 months ago? then you need to renew it

The easiest way to renew any of these licenses is to do the “Transport Canada endorsed self-paced study program” (see 1.B.C.C above).

You’re gonna ask me, but what the hell is that thing? It’s a 30 questions test provided by Transport Canada which seems to be published every 2 years. It has 30 questions….. .with the answers at the end….soooo not too too complicated to do….

You need to fill it up, date it, sign it and keep it with you every time you go flying. If you don’t have it and you get checked, it’s like flying with an expired license….
